ARC: Curious Minds by Janet Evanovich and Phoef and Sutton

I received a free copy of this from BookBridgr in return for an honest review.

Okay so technically this book has been out for a while but with book 2 coming out soon, readers are getting a chance to read this one for free. The second I saw Janet Evanovich's name and read the plot, I knew I had to read this and I was so pleased to get it that I read it as quickly as possible.

What I Like

So with summer coming, we're all looking for quick and easy reads that we can enjoy whilst we're on holiday and I would say this is the perfect holiday read if you enjoy mysteries. It's an average length but you'll find yourself getting through the chapters super quickly and if you need to put the book down for whatever reason, you won't find yourself lost.

This doesn't mean that the story is predictable though. I'd never read a story about a banker helping a man find his gold before and that stood out to me. It made me wonder what sort of mystery it could be and the book kept me guessing as I went along. The other thing that's different is that we don't have an alpha-male type love interest here. Nope, this time he's pretty but he's eccentric, he can do things like martial arts and scaling rocks but at no point do you expect him to grab the girl and kiss her or forbid her from helping out. It was a nice change but there was one little problem...

What I Didn't Like

I'm sorry to say that I didn't actually like the characters. I know, I know, I should feel ashamed of myself as they had the promise to be great with this whole new plot and Evanovich's humorous writing style. But something about them fell flat and best and Emerson was annoying at worst. Don't get me wrong, there were times I liked all the main characters. I liked that Riley is a tomboy who likes Batman but dresses all pretty for work, I like that Emerson isn't what you'd expect and the few moments he was like Sherlock Holmes were great. But I just...didn't find myself enjoying them. I didn't really enjoy the humour either and a lot of the time I found this new and interesting plot boring.

I could go on so much more about what I didn't like about this book and it left me so disappointed. I was really excited by this book but very quickly let down. I feel like it could have been done so much better but it just sort of...flopped for me personally.

However, it's very much a typical Janet Evanovich book in many areas so if you're a big fan of her or her Co-author you might like it or maybe you won't. I'd still suggest giving it a go if you're looking for an easy read this summer.

2/5 Stars
